How Sweet are His Words

“How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!”  Psalms 119:103

In Psalm 119:103 the words of God are said to be sweeter than honey. Honey was and is used today as a natural sweetener. God’s teachings bring a sweetness to the life we live. Our tongues crave a sweet dessert or treat as our lives should crave the sweetness of God and His word.

This desire doesn’t come from good works or going to church, but from the one and only giver of sweet things, God. While we learn much from the Bible as we listen to a pastor preach a sermon, we shouldn’t rely on this alone as our sweetness. We need to learn to enjoy God and His word for ourselves.

As we look at our lives we can see many things that bring sweetness. Unfortunately, many of us rely on the things of the world to bring satisfaction to our lives. C.S. Lewis said:

“We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”

You can’t go far without being offered something in this world to satisfy your cravings, be it emotional or physical.  Billboards, magazines, commercials, and the internet promise satisfaction guaranteed.   Many including myself sometimes suffer from FOMO as my husband would say, or Fear Of Missing Out.  The problem is, after the sweetness wears off immediately comes the “sugar rush”.  And then we want more because it’s not enough.  We want more and more and more.  But my desire is to crave God rather than the trappings of this world.  I want HIS sweetness first and foremost in my life.  He’s the only one who can truly satisfy.  That’s my prayer for you too, that you would develop a sweet tooth for God and His word.  “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” Psalm 34:8 🙂

Here’s a short video of me doing this page.  I had so much fun with this! 😀
