God called, “Where are you?”

But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”  Genesis 3:9

This entry enabled me to look at Adam & Eve’s story with fresh eyes.  I attempted to put myself in Eve’s shoes (or lack of shoes..sorry ;)) to feel what she would have felt right after she sinned.  Fear, worry, shame, dread and loss of connection with God would have enveloped me as I waited for Him to find me…

But instead of running FROM God, He wants us to run TO Him.  He wants to cover our shame with His love, mend our hearts, clean us up and restore a right relationship with Him again.  Amazingly enough, God wants intimacy with us.

Rebekah R. Jones’s “Heaven is Calling”  Lesson #2: (It ministered to me so much!)

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”10 And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” 11 He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?

I feel like God is calling us saying, “Where are you?”. Today, I want to urge you to step in to breathe deeply of God’s presence. I feel like God is beckoning us to lean in to His pursuit of us. There is more for all of us regardless where we are at, (or not), in relationship with Him.

Heaven Is Calling Lesson Two - A Bible Art Journaling Challenge Series

You know as kids when parents play hide and seek with us? How the parents deliberately hide in a place where they can be found by us? Healthy parents adore how precious it is when their children seek them out and they love to teach them how to seek and be found. But when grown up kids cannot find it in themselves to pursue their Father, He will do anything to pursue them. The gap gets filled regardless who pursues. He adores us that much. But the romance is deeper when both seek connection mutually.

Adam and Eve hid from God in shame after they realized their sin. But God pursued them even in their moment of weakness. God came to them in the cool of the day and searched them out, to be with them. He called out saying, “Where are you?”. And I feel He wants to say the same to many of us now.

“Where are you?”

“Will you make yourself known to Me?”

“Will you step away from anything that may cause us to have a disconnect?”

“Will you pursue connection with Me, like I pursue your heart?”

If you are someone who doesn’t feel you deserve relationship with God, feel unworthy or even afraid or unsure of it… I want to encourage you to invite God to be the gentleman He is, and woo you. Yes, yes I did just say woo. Let Him draw you close and prove himself like anyone would have to in your life. He doesn’t want to barge into your life. He wants to lavish you with so much love, that any pain or hurt from past relationships just melts away in His love. He is in pursuit of you. He is the ultimate romantic and He is the perfect Father who adores you. No matter what state you come to Him in, He is ready to lavish you with love.

I hear Him calling just like the old song says, “Come, just as you are…“.

As you ponder ways that you can make room for more of God in your heart, I want to share this video with you. The Father’s Love Letter was created 15 years ago and this is an anniversary edition which I pray really stirs your heart. Well, actually, I pray it melts your heart. That it melts away any pain of the past and gives you even greater freedom to trust God in deeper ways moving forward. May you feel the love of your Father and feel lavished in His loving pursuit of you.

In response to Rebekah’s lesson, I pulled out an old song that touched me deeply in the past, and it still moves me to tears.  It’s like a love song back to God.  Let the words sink in and bring healing if you’re far away and want to come close to God.
