This is How Love Wins

Jesus Suffering

“Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.”  John 15:13

A day of great solemnity, Good Friday calls us to do what the disciples could not. Good Friday calls us to join Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Jesus and John at the foot of the cross. Good Friday invites us to enter that most excruciating moment of standing in our own impotence, unable to stop the dying. This day calls us to the steadiness of being present with Jesus and with one another in those harrowing moments of suffering and death. ~Mary Earle

I prayed that I would capture and express a glimpse of Jesus’s pain in the strokes of colored pencil, through His facial features.  It’s only a single moment of time in a day of tremendous pain and suffering.

I spent a lot of time searching for an image, and out of hundreds, no thousands, this one (from the Passion of Christ) just spoke to me so much.  Wanting to find a song to go with it, I showed my finished drawing to my husband and asked if he knew of such a song.  He showed me a song by Steven Curtis Chapman called “This is How Love Wins.”  The words to this song are incredibly moving and brought me to tears.  I knew this video was the one.  Instead of telling you something about that day, I wanted to show you, to help you experience it yourself.  Sometimes an image, the melody and lyrics to a song, or a clip to a movie can express what words cannot.  This is the marriage of all three.  We see the intense love of Jesus in action.  The song is initially from the thief’s perspective and how each of us are like the theif too. It is never to late for us to come to Christ – we don’t have to be like we were before because of the sacrifice and love of Christ; he makes us a new creation when we follow him – no matter what our past.

Please take a few minutes on this Good Friday to watch this video.  If you don’t have time to do it now, please save it for later.  Listen to the words.  Watch to the end…. it’s extremely powerful and moving.
